Redwood Class Information

Welcome to Redwood Class! We hope you find the information here useful.

Class expectations:

Please ensure your child:

  • Brings their reading book into school everyday
  • Reads at least 3 times a week with a signature in reading records
  • Has their PE kit in school everyday
  • Wears the correct uniform
  • Brings their knowledge organiser folder (blue folder) into school each day
  • Completes 3 sessions of Doodle Maths practice outside of school each week.

Please refer to school policies or ask about any of the above if you are unsure.

Home learning

Please continue to support and encourage your child to read daily at home. We ask that an adult signs their child’s reading record at least 3 times per week to confirm that they are reading regularly at home, and we will continue to celebrate and reward those who have 3 signatures in their book at the end of each week.

Doodle Maths and Times Tables Rockstars logins are kept in the children’s reading records, but please don’t hesitate to be in touch if your child is having trouble getting online. Certificates are given out weekly in Celebration Assembly to celebrate excellent effort on TT Rockstars and there are many rewards within DoodleMaths which pupils can 'purchase'!

What are we doing in class?

Term 6

English

Year 5 are using several short films to inspire and structure a range of writing. High Diving Giraffes encourages us to look at technical vocabulary linked to sport and the impersonal style as we write explanations and a sports commentary. For the Birds is a sensitive film, which explore the nature of bullying. We will be looking in depth at character and how to use dialogue to show the lasting effects of bullying. We will then plan a persuasive letter using main points with supporting arguments. At the end of term, Year 5 and Year 6 will work together on Titanium to explore figurative language in setting descriptions. We will be looking at writing formally in a newspaper report and contrasting this with a diary entry.

Year 6s continue to work on a range of writing with Mr Cottrell as they work toward completing their portfolio of learning for end of year assessments. This will include stories, letters, non-chronological reports, instruction texts and more.

As a class, we are reading Who Let the Gods Out? by Maz Evans  - a humorous fantasy adventure with links to Greek mythology. We will be discussing the themes of the book, drawing inferences and justifying with evidence, summarising ideas across paragraphs and chapters as well as identifying how language, structure and presentation contribute to meaning.

Maths

Well done to all those pupils, who are regularly logging in to TTRockstars and Doodle Maths. It does have a real positive impact.

Year 5 will be finishing their unit on position and direction before moving on to decimals, negative numbers, converting units and measurement (volume).  Year 6 will be consolidating all the hard work in preparing for the KS2 Sats by learning calculator skills that will be directly relevant when they move on to Year 7 and by using a range of skills to tackle broad ranging investigations covering a variety of areas.

History

How did Britain change between the end of the Roman occupation and 1066?

To answer this question at the end of the unit, we will explore the following questions:

  • Who were the Anglo-Saxons and why did they invade Britain?
  • Who were the Vikings and why did they have a reputation for being fierce raiders?
  • What was the long-term impact of the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings on our lives today?
  • Who were the famous Anglo-Saxon kings?
  • How important was the Norman conquest in 1066?

Science

Having completed our learning on Light, we will be looking back at all our Science learning in KS2 to consolidate and build on our skills. This will cover the following topics:

  • Animals and their habitats
  • Living things including humans
  • Evolution and inheritance
  • Light and sound
  • Forces
  • Materials and states of matter
  • Electricity

Art

How can I create a 3D sculpture from wire?

We will be exploring the following questions:

  • What experience do I have of sculpture?
  • What do I know about Elizabeth Berrien, focusing on her wire sculptures?
  • Which techniques will I need to develop to create a sculpture of an animal?
  • How much practice will I need before moving on to my final piece?
  • What are my thoughts about my final piece? Will it be good enough for our class exhibition?
